Encouraging Active Student Participation in Chemistry Classes with a Web

چکیده
Much of the debate surrounding the use of lecture-based classes as a method for teaching science has focused on the passive role assumed by students in lecture (1, 2, 3). The communication channel is primarily instructor-to-student. Numerous studies have shown that student performance in science classes improves with increasing levels of active participation by students in classroom discussions (4, 5, 6). Cooperative learning techniques, classroom discussion, and turn-to-your-neighbor (7) activities are all methods designed to improve not only instructor-to-student communication, but also student-to-instructor and student-to-student communication. In this paper, we describe a new technology-based Student Response System (SRS) for improving instructor-to-student and student-to-instructor communication that we have used effectively in both large and small classes.

Encouraging Initiative in the Classroom with Anonymous Feedback
Inspiring and maintaining student participation in large classes can be a difficult task. Students benefit from an active experience as it helps them better understand the course material. However, it’s easy to stay silent. Opportunities to participate in conversation allow students to question and learn. The Fragmented Social Mirror (FSM) provides students with the ability to anonymously initi...

This paper presents early results from using an asynchronous web-based discussion forum coupled with an integrated student peer rating system as one component of an Information Technology course taught in large section format. The potential for asynchronous discussions to enhance student participation and learner outcomes has previously been established (Anderson & Elloumi, 2004, Corich et al.,...
متن کاملA blended approach to active learning in a physiology laboratory-based subject facilitated by an e-learning component.
Learning via online activities (e-learning) was introduced to facilitate existing face-to-face teaching to encourage more effective student preparation and then informed participation in an undergraduate physiology laboratory-based course. Active learning was encouraged by hypothesis formation and predictions prior to classes, with opportunities for students to amend their e-learning submission...

Active participation of students in teaching is the one of the effective way of learning in science education according to large investigation. By this way students understand current level of knowledge, increasing the student’s eagerness and their attraction for learning. This study was designed to explore the effect of active student involvement in teaching and learning of the bacteriology in...
